Dear Oprah: I Want To Work For You

Dear Oprah,

I’m Chris Sumlin, and this May I have the honor of graduating from Morehouse College with a degree in Cinema, Television & Emerging Media Studies. As commencement draws near friends, family and faculty have asked me what am I doing after graduation. I’ve applied to odd jobs here and there, but no company seems to embody what I desire to work for like the Oprah Winfrey Network. Since I was 18 years old, I have been a follower of OWN and its programming. Watching season one of the Haves and the Have Nots was a family tradition in our home. There was even one moment where you tweeted me back during one of your #HAHN Live tweeting parties; it was a moment I will never forget.

As I grew older, I began watching, SuperSoul Sunday, Lifeclass, and Masterclass. These programs taught me about intention, visualization and have helped me on the journey of fulfilling the highest, most truthful expression of myself possible as a human being.

I believe in my soul that working for the Oprah Winfrey Network is the next best move for me following Morehouse. Throughout my time at Morehouse, I had a quote on my wall that read, “Making a bold move is the only way to truly advance toward the grandest vision the universe has for you.” I got this quote from attending your “The Life You Want Weekend” presentation my sophomore year of college in Atlanta. Since that weekend I have visualized myself working with you and your company to impact and change lives through television.

During my senior year I placed a large poster of the OWN logo over my door believing that when I walk out of Morehouse, I will walk into the Oprah Winfrey Network. One thing that you have taught me is that in life we don’t get what we want. We get what believe we are worthy of. I truly believe that I am worthy of an opportunity to work for your network. I have studied the TV business, studied the Oprah Winfrey Network brand and even have worked on my spiritual practice. I know that I have what it takes to be an asset to your team.

I hope that as you read this letter, you feel my soul and intention. I’m not sure if you look at resumes, but I’ve attached a copy of mine that you can view, here. I hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,

Chris Sumlin
